Essential Zarzuela! is entertaining night of passion and laughter. The centrepiece of the programme, Bohemios, is a Spanish take on “la vie Bohème” by composer Amadeo Vives. Premiered in 1904, Bohemios reflects the composer’s youthful exuberance and operatic influences, with hints of a more modern sensibility. The performance features a cast of artists deeply familiar with this specialized form, tenor Fabian Arciniegas and soprano Maureen Batt, with music director Kate Carver realizing the lush score at the piano.
Rounding out the programme: highlights from the great wealth of delectable Spanish zarzuela repertoire, exploring themes of romance, intrigue, and comedy. Essential Opera welcomes back favourite artists and some new faces. This is a wonderful opportunity for audiences to hear gorgeous music that is unfamiliar to many.
